In conjunction with the series ‘forget not recollect’, which followed the use of the painter’s and photographer’s tool, the ‘black mirror’, these landscapes were shot in reference to one of the first ‘ground down’ materials, lava stone, which was used to produce black mirrors. Secondly, these copper plate prints, shot on a 18x13cm sheet film bellows camera, were a study into the ground below our feet in reference to ‘surface’, lava being the first and base of all surfaces. The landscapes, dry and solid, hide that which lies below, vibrant and churning lava. The stone acts as a metaphor for a visible ‹outer› face and reminds us that movement can solidify, that we should continue to move within our selves.
